Annual Formal Inspection

Friday 8th January

Thank you to all those cadets who supported the evening and spoke openly to Wing Commander Archibald and his Wing Staff Team, consisting of Squadron Leader Rimmer and Warrant Officer Cooper.

I think I can say that they were impressed with our performances over the last 12 months.

We have a wonderful Staff Team and a great Civilian Welfare Committee and I remain grateful for their endless commitment.

We are a very active and vibrant squadron and that reflects on the commitments of all our cadets and their parents and guardians. Thanks to all for your support.

The squadron is running:

Careers Convention

Thursday 4th February

We are invited each year to St Mary’s School careers evening to promote the Squadron and our activities.

We have recruited cadets from the school over many years and some cadets are at the school now.

It is always well supported by universities and commerce representatives, with many armed services and public service representatives in attendance.
A great place to make career enquiries.

Thanks to Sergeants Jacob Beaver and Katie Morrell who gave up their evening to support the event.

Aerospace Weekend

Friday 5th - Sunday 7th February

A weekend of clay target shooting, orienteering, obstacle course, flight simulator and leadership tasks was enjoyed by all. Although the cold and windy weather did spoil it for some and forced us to miss out on some obstacles on the course.
Thanks to all the cadets who participated enthusiastically.

Thanks to the following staff who gave up their weekend to support the activities.

Flight Lieutenant Liam McGuire, Deputy Wing Shooting Officer for his support with the clay target shooting.
He was so impressed, he has invited some cadets back to try for a place in the Wing Clay Target Shooting Team.

Flying Officer Matt Coakley, 319 (City of Salford) Squadron for his assistance on the obstacle course.

Squadron staff Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell and Warrant Officer Mike Daley.

Well done to the Senior NCO’s, Sergeants Jacob Beaver, Katie Morrell and Tom Rowley who organised and ran the leadership tasks. You all worked hard making the tasks interesting.

Wing Cross Country Competition

Sunday 14th February

We almost fielded a full team today with exception of Senior Boys, as this event clashed with an opportunity for flying.

Junior Girls

Cadets Caitlin Beckley and Shannon Bradley

Senior Girls

Sergeant Katie Morrell and Corporal Abbie Gregson

Junior Boys

Cadets Justin Markland and Daniel Platt

Intermediate Boys

Sergeants Jacob Beaver, Tom Rowley and Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst

Well done for braving the very cold weather but at least the sun was out!

The boys came 17th in their competition. Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst came 20th from 68 runners and Cadet Justin Markland came 13th from 77.
The girls came 8th in their competition.
An overall result of 9th as a Squadron. Great result.

Thanks to Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell, Warrant Officer Mike Daley and Mrs Deb Gregson who transported the team.
Thanks also to the other parents who volunteered to help with transport, even though we managed on the day.

Flying

Sunday 14th February

Some flying places came up at short notice that clashed with the cross country, so some cadets were torn about what to do.

Those who had their first flight today were Corporal Harry Powell, Cadets Joe Kay and Daniel Murphy.

Unfortunately Cadets Georgio Adamopoulos and Ethan Clarke-Gauld were too small to fly, being unable to wear the survival equipment kit.

North Region Bag Pack

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th February

The aim of this weekend was for Air Cadets, North Region to ask support from squadrons to do a weekend of bag packing at many Morrisons stores across the North.

The money raised is to be split with 50% going to the squadron and the other 50% being split by Region and Morrison’s charities.
North Region are fundraising for a special events day, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Air Cadet Organisation.

On Saturday we were supported by Sergeants Jacob Beaver, Katie Morrell, Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst, Cadets Caitlin Beckley, Bradley Atherton, Joseph Driscoll, Ethan Clarke-Gauld, Alex Lambley, Thomas Maher, Justin Markland, Bailey McCadden, Daniel Murphy and Lewis Topping.

We were not expecting to support Sunday so I told the cadets they could have a well-earned day off!
However at the last minute, it was confirmed that Sunday would be available so we frantically tried to get cadets together, as it was too good an opportunity to miss.

On the Sunday morning, Cadets Caitlin Beckley, Justin Markland and Daniel Murphy worked for three hours solid without a break.
What wonderful energy they showed.

Help arrived in the afternoon in the form of Sergeant Katie Morrell, Corporals Harry Powell and Abbie Gregson.

We were inundated with compliments about our young people today from the shoppers. I can honestly say I have never heard as many. You were a credit to us and we are so proud of you.

Over the weekend we raised £1097.49p. The shoppers were extremely generous and we thank them for their support.
Thanks to our hosts Morrisons and their staff.

Wing Training Weekend

Saturday 5th - Sunday 6th March

This was the first Wing Training Weekend that they were unable to run as residential, due to lack of accommodation at our usual places.
It was better to travel each day than to not run the courses altogether.

The following cadets are to be congratulated on their success at passing their courses.

Initial Standards Course

Cadets Caitlin Beckley, Oliver Cannon, Joe Kay and Justin Markland

Junior NCO's Course

Cadet Alex Lambley

Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell was also in attendance this weekend in support of Leadership Training for both courses.

North Region Hockey Competition

Sunday 6th March

Sergeant Katie Morrell and 8 other girls from around Greater Manchester Wing attended the event today, despite not having a full team of 11 with reserves.
The snowy weather nearly put the event in jeopardy on the Saturday but a final pitch inspection was encouraging, as after all their weeks of training they really wanted to play.

They went in strong and confident and the girls played excellently to gain 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. This gave them second place overall and they came home with Silver Medals and Wing Blues.

In addition 6 of the Wing girls including Sergeant Morrell have been selected to attend trials to represent the Region later on in the month. We wish them all good luck.

They were accompanied by Wing Commander Archibald, Squadron Leader Hamilton and Hockey Team Coach, Flight Sergeant Nightingale (ATC).

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expeditions

Sunday 1st - Monday 2nd May

With snow, hail and heavy rain on the Saturday, this weekend was in jeopardy for Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday and we were unsure if it would go ahead.

Nonetheless we turned up to see what the conditions were like and we were lucky. There was low cloud all day Sunday, which was bearable with good kit and both groups did well.
Their campcraft and cooking skills up at Brocklehead Farm were excellent and the weather was kind that evening.

On the Monday after a heavy downpour, the sun came out at lunch time and it was glorious. A great end to the weekend.
Well done to all the cadets who had a good walking pace.

Cadets Ethan Clarke-Gauld, Jacob Farr, Joe Kay, Daniel Murphy and Lewis Topping, are now close to finishing their Bronze Awards.

Also well done to Cadets Caitlin Beckley, Joe Driscoll, Seb Foy and Justin Markland with two cadets from 319 (City of Salford) Squadron, Corporal Noe Ignatowicz and Cadet Liam Cole, who were on a Bronze Practice, you also did very well.

Annual Presentation

Friday 6th May

Thank you to Glynis Horton of SSAFA and her guest Marion, who presented the awards through-out the evening. She did a great job and was bursting with pride in support of you all.
Glynis has also personally donated £240 to the Squadron for the purchase of five excellent rucksacks, that can be used to sponsor cadets through their Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions.
Thanks for that Glin!

Whilst there were so many outstanding elements to the evening, a summary of awards are as follows.

Cadet of the Year

Cadet Joe Kay

Junior Cadet of the Year

Cadet Shannon Bradley

Sports Cadet of the Year

Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell

As usual the cadets were exemplary in their support for each award and we congratulate you all for everything that you have gained and achieved.
We have some outstanding young people.

I am sure you want to thank our wonderful staff team without whom many of the activities and events would not take place.
They give up such valuable time away from their families and partners and sometimes I think this is forgotten.
They are all unpaid volunteers who give up every Wednesday and Friday and many weekends.
Thank you again.

Thank you to all our parents, guardians, families and friends who supported this evening. We had a great night.
Your commitment to our young people is second to none.

Thanks to Ritchie, a great DJ who entertained us for the evening and the Royal British Legion Boothstown who always welcome us enthusiastically.

Thanks again for a great night. We look forward to another great year.

ATC 75th Anniversary

Saturday 30th July

The 75th Anniversary Torch has been travelling around the country and it was the turn of Greater Manchester Wing, over weekend of the 30th - 31st July, to carry on the relay.
The plan was for cadets to cycle each leg with the torch, in support of the event with Wing Commander Archibald cycling all the way.

On the Saturday, 1099 greeted the torch as it travelled to many of the local squadrons.
The cadets made a banner which was liked by the Air Commandant who tweeted us!

Thanks to Civilian Instructor Mr Joe Morrell, Sergeant Harry Powell and Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst who supported the event at 1099 Headquarters.

Unfortunately, it was running very late so it skipped us and went straight to 319 (City of Salford) Squadron.
Undeterred, Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell, Warrant Officer Mike Daley, Cadet Sergeant Jacob Beaver, Cadets Caitlin Beckley, Shannon Bradley and Thomas Maher travelled to Salford Squadron to greet it.
We took some great photos and each held the torch.

Well done to everybody who came and supported. It was a memorable event.

Wednesday 3rd - Friday 12th August

Corporal Abbie Gregson flew to RAF Troodos, Cyprus for a week of sunny activities which included sub-aqua.

This week also counted towards her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Residential section.
This week has many aims as mentioned on the Duke of Edinburgh Award website, you had a great course report, well done.

Wednesday 3rd - Sunday 14th August

Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell travelled to Manston in Kent on for an overnight stay to catch the ferry to travel to Germany.
Ramstein camp is ran by the United States Air Force and many activities were based around USAF.
They also had the privilege of visiting the German Luftwaffe.

Parachute Course

Sunday 7th - Saturday 13th August

Sergeant Grace Leather and Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst were lucky enough to both get selected to do the parachute course at RAF Weston-on-the Green, Bicester.

Sadly, the great British weather was pretty rubbish this week. Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst went up into the air only to fly back down again, as it was too windy to jump and that remained so for the rest of the week.

Sergeant Grace Leather however, was in the air at the right time and managed to get her parachute jump done.
It was the best (but scariest) thing that she has ever done.
This week also counted towards Sergeant Leather’s Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Residential section.

ATC 75th Anniversary

Saturday 13th August

On the way back from the parachute course, Sergeant Grace Leather and Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst, along with other cadets from Greater Manchester Wing, visited RAF College Cranwell to watch the 75th Anniversary Parade and Musical Extravaganza.

Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty along with Honorary Group Captain & Ambassador of the ATC, Carol Vordeman was in attendance.

The Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew over the parade and there was a grand finale of fireworks.

A great experience for our young representatives on what was the end of a very long week.

SSAFA Bag Pack

Thank you once again to Sergeant Jacob Beaver, Cadets Shannon Bradley, Joe Kay and Lewis Topping who gave up another full day to support the bag pack.

Other cadets who did varying hours were Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell as she travelled back from Germany, Corporal Abbie Gregson just back from Cyprus, Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst shattered from his parachute course and Cadets Thomas Ashworth and James Downey.

Their commitment to SSAFA and the Squadron is great, many thanks.

Many cadets got to visit Air Traffic Control and had a go on the flight simulator.

Returning on the Tuesday to better weather, six cadets; Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell, Sergeant Jacob beaver, Cadets Shannon Bradley, Joe Kay, Daniel Murphy and Lewis Topping got into the air.

Thanks to 10 AEF for some great flying opportunities.

Cadets Thomas Ashworth, Caitlin Beckley, Ethan Clarke-Gauld, Justin Markland, Daniel Murphy and Daniel Platt, had a busy weekend of fun activities which included abseiling, quad biking, raft building, shooting, Jacob’s ladder and orienteering.

Cold War Jet’s Day

Sunday 28th August

Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell, Civilian Instuctor Miss Holly Moreland, Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell, Cadets Bradley Atherton, Seb Foy and Joe Kay, travelled to Leicestershire with other cadets and staff from around the Wing.

The event was to raise money for the airfield to keep the jets active and running.
Whilst many of the aircraft are no longer allowed to get airborne, we did see all of them fast track down the runway.

It was a busy day for aviation enthusiasts who saw Bucanneers, Lightening, Victor, Hunter, Canberra’s, Nimrod and the Jet Provosts at full speed.

Thanks to Pilot Officer Jed Ingham of 1036 (Bury) Squadron for organising.

Wednesday 28th September - Monday 3rd October

At last, the time had come. Four days authorised leave from college. Five eager cadets, Flight Sergeant Katie Morrell, Sergeants Jacob Beaver, Abbie Gregson, Grace Leather and Corporal Lewis Swinglehurst travelled through Fort William.
Accompanied by Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell, Civilian Instructor Mr Joe Morrell and our Mountain Leader Civilian Instructor Mr James MacDonald.
Staying at a bunk house in Roybridge for the first night and to meet the assessor, Mr Doug Little.

The weather through the highlands was challenging for driving, going through a storm along the route. Hopes that it would not spoil the start of the expedition.

Day 1

The storm was still in place but was expected to pass by about 10am. Delaying the start to facilitate this, the group got going having an amazing day.
Each determined to take photographs and evidence for the project aims and objectives. Hydro-electric power scheme, history of the lochs, the landscape and wildlife to name but a few.
The first night was a wild camp and settled in nicely and enjoyed the experience.

Day 2

This was a long walk up to Corrour, the group passing amazing scenery and deer.
Camping at nearby Loch Ossian and grateful to the Scottish YHA for allowing the use of the toilet.

Day 3

This was the trickiest section, through undulating terrain, boggy from the previous days storm.
The final bothy landmark appeared eventually, leaving a descent to the campsite at Killichonate.

Day 4

Tired but energised for the last stretch, a trek out of the Glen up towards the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge, a popular tourist attraction and a fitting finish.
Mr Doug Little, the assessor was delighted with the group's progress, dedication, commitment and determination through-out their expedition.

After a hot shower and a change of clothes the group were taken to other popular tourist attractions.
Neptune’s staircase on the Caledonian Canal and the viaduct that appears in Harry Potter, which was over in Glen Finnan.
Today was gloriously hot, ice creams and shorts by the canal.

Well done, a fitting end to achieving your Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Staff Training Course

Friday 28th - Sunday 30th October

Staff training is a very important aspect of Greater Manchester Wing’s training ethos and since January 2015 several courses have been designed.
The aim of these progressive courses are, to support and introduce Civilian Instructors and new staff cadets, into Greater Manchester Wing’s policies and procedures.
There are also practical tips for training and opportunities and to see what is new in the organisation, with regards to staff and cadet development.

Civilian Instructors Miss Holly Moreland and Mr Joe Morrell both attended the weekend.
Mr Morrell had many years as a cadet and reached the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer but he still learnt some great teaching tips.
They both enjoyed the weekend very much.
