Wednesday 5th February
Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell and Sergeant Ava Joyce gave up their day time to visit the RAF Outreach Team at their new premises in Aintree.
The visit allowed an opportunity to see the facilities and discuss potential bookings.
There are a series of team challenges and exercises that are clearly well thought out. The centre is also used to assess potential candidates for joining the Royal Air Force. So if you are thinking of joining, then it would be advantageous that you have a go at the exercises.
Watch the notice board for future dates.

Two mini buses full of cadets and all staff travelled during Friday morning to RAF Cosford’s extensive Air Museum. Everyone enjoyed a look around the displays of aircraft, missiles and excellent visual displays, such as the space wars between Russia and America.
The afternoon was spent at Shrewsbury Swimming Pool, where a bouncy inflatable water feature and a flume slide were enjoyed by all.
Saturday and Sunday were spent between the range at RAF Shawbury and the Sports Hangar. Here cadets completed elements of their ongoing Sports Leader’s awards.
Well done to Cadet Harry Powell who qualified for his Squadron Marksman and to Cadet Lewis Swinglehurst who qualified for is Regional Marksman.

- Regional Rugby & Hockey
Saturday 29th March
We were told that our very longstanding Squadron President Mr Tim Willemsen had died overnight following a battle with ill-health.
Even though he was nearly 92 he still didn’t think he was old!
Tim started with the squadron not long after we formed in November 1967 when his son Mike joined as a cadet.
Tim had been treasurer and chairman over his lifetime with us and became our Squadron President in 1990 and remained so until the present day.
He had been presented with several Long Term Meritorious Service certificates by the many Commandants of Air Cadets, which have been in command of the organisation during his time.
He will be greatly missed.
Regional Junior Football Competition
Sunday 2nd March
Cadet Lewis Swinglehurst was selected to represent Greater Manchester Wing after a series of trials and a training session over the last few weekends.

Cadet Swinglehurst has been selected to attend a trial to represent the North Region team.
We wish him well in his selection.
Wednesday 12th March
The meeting was well attended by many parents and guardians. There was an opportunity to see the band, e D of E and the ultilearn syllabus.
Each of the squadron staff updated them about their current roles on the squadron. It was also an opportunity to see some of the training aids that are in use.
Flying & Gliding
Sunday 16th March
The squadron had been allocated 13 flying places but these were cancelled as the wind speed was too great at RAF Woodvale.
We had hoped that those cadets who were selected to go on their Gliding Induction Courses, would have better luck but sadly over at RAF Topcliffe, the wind also would not settle.
This however gave an opportunity to look around the glider in detail.
Thanks to all the cadets and staff who waited patiently.

Sunday 16th March
Cadets Jakub Amin and Oliver Cannon were selected to represent the wing in the rugby competition.

RAF Shawbury Communications Badge Weekend
Friday 11th - Monday 14th April
Well done to all the cadets that participated in the activity weekend which consisted of a series or practical radio exercises and some theory. The modules will go towards the cadets working to gain their Communications Badges.
On the Monday, 12 cadets and staff had a busy section visit day around RAF Shawbury.
They visited 60 Squadron (RAF) that trains pilots on the Griffin helicopter, after they have passed basic helicopter training with 705 (Royal Navy) Squadron (Helicopter Defence Flying School).
Thanks to the generosity of Flight Lieutenant Andy Inman they were fortunate to have a morning with the crew, experience the early morning brief and have a flight in the Squirrel helicopters.
This allowed lots of communications opportunities in the air.
Thanks very much to one of the assistant Air Cadet Liasion Officers, Flight Sergeant Kiel McPhillips, who gave the cadets a tour around Air Traffic control and approach control.
To finish the day, the cadets visited the Aircraft Maintainance Unit right on the other side of the airfield. This was very interesting as there were lots of different aircraft, to see the technicians and engineers working on.
Visits like this allow our cadets to see the RAF on a working day. It is a wonderful opportunity for the cadets to see if they fancy any particular career path.
Thanks to all the squadron staff for their commitment over the four days.

It allowed us to select the best team members for the forthcoming Volleyball Competition.

A glorious day at Boothstown Festival which holds it’s support of Armed Forces Day. There were brass bands, pipe bands and other community clubs on exhibition.

Silver Practice Expedition     Lake District
Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd June
A quick exit after school to Pooley Bridge, near Penrith for this party of cadets, all excited to be embarking upon their Silver D of E Expedition.
A great camp site and a good days walking ahead. It was very warm and the route undulating, so the cadets did marvellous at completing their journey.
On their way to the second camp site at Burns Farm, towards Keswick, it was alarmingly heard that the Morrells dog, Rummy age 5 had died. It appeared that, he had suffered a fatal arrhythmia (heart rhythm). Whilst we were all very shocked, all the cadets comforted Joe and Katie who were clearly devastated.
I would like to thank all of you that were understanding and supportive to us all.
The group continued their walking on the Sunday despite all that had happened with true courage and determination.
Well done to Corporals Jacob Beaver, Abbie Gregson, Katie Morrell, Tom Rowley, Cadets Jakub Amin, Adam Holland, Matthew Jacovelli, Grace Leather, Tom McNicholas, Jonathan Schofield and Lewis Swinglehurst, who were on their expedition.

Youth First Aid & Heartstart Course
Tuesday 8th - Wednesday 9th July
Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell and Sergeant Ava Joyce (ATC) ran the course, which started at 4pm after school and ran until 10pm on both days, as this is a twelve hour course.
During the course the cadets take part in a series of practical sessions, work books and observe power point and DVD presentations.
The cadets then complete a practical exam which involves CPR, recovery position and a stressful scenario which, involves controlling a bleeding wound.
Well done to Cadets Bradley Atherton, James Crittenden, Amber Glennie and Matthew Morris on passing the exam.
Satellite Communications Exam
Wednesday 9th July
Eleven Cadets took their Satellite Communications Exam this evening. I can proudly say that all passed.

Royal International Air Tattoo     RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire
Thursday 10th - Tuesday 15th July
Flight Lieutenant Samantha Morrell and Sergeant Ava Joyce (ATC) were accompanied by Corporals Abbie Gregson, Katie Morrell, Tom Rowley, Cadets Oliver Cannon, Grace Leather and Lewis Swinglehurst.
The cadets were split into flights, that were named after different aircraft and then they were allocated various tasks during show days.
Tasks are very varied and include duties from cleaning up the huge ATC camp site, preparing 5,000 packed lunches, VIP duties with Senior Tattoo Organisers and the Royal Family and patrolling the crowd line, so that members of the public don’t get through to the runway.
Cadets helped to serve refreshments to pilots of visiting Air Forces from Italy, France, Switzerland, Jordan and Poland. They also help to guide members of the public through the many show case areas.
Foreign Object Damage (FOD PLOD) is a big task to keep the airfield safe for the aircraft, especially after so many visitors (150,000 each day) have visited.
Several of our cadets got to work with the RAF Red Arrows this year. They met the pilot of the new F-35 Lightning II and saw the new Airbus A400M currently planned to replace the Hercules.
The event is organised by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and donates a proportion of it’s money to the Air Cadet Organisation (ACO). They could not do it without us and this year the ACO, had 1,000 cadets and staff at it’s peak on show days.
We will bid for places again next year as long as we have escorting staff.

RCO’s are assessed every year but every four years a full and deeper assessment takes place.
Pleasingly both passed and we would like to thank the Wing Shooting Officer, Flight Lieutenant Lee Moore and North Region Small Arms Training Team Assessor, Sergeant Chris Wimbury for facilitating the opportunity.

Cadet Warrant Officer Joe Morrell, Flight Sergeant Tom Scowcroft, Sergeant Rebecca Simcock, Corporals Abbie Gregson, Katie Morrell, Tom Rowley, Cadets Adam Holland, Grace Leather and Lewis Swinglehurst, who attended today to help raise funds, were all an absolute credit to us, very polite and professional.
Thank you to the staff, Flight Sergeant Mike Daley (ATC) and Civilian Instructor Mr Tom Appleby who supported this event today.
It has to be said that whilst these cadets were wonderful, there were not enough of them. It was complicated by the fact, that we had so many cadets on holiday and we had the expedition on.
The money from Leigh Asda has been passed to members of the Civilian Committee to sort and count. We will let you have the result as soon as we know it.
The day was offered to us by Sergeant Ava Joyce’s mum Dierdrie.
A big thank you to all the Staff at Asda.
